Having taught for 10 years and holding a middle grades certificate in social studies, language arts, and reading, McKinnell has taught 8th grade reading and American history as well as 7th grade social studies.  McKinnell received her Bachelors from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, with teaching certification from Baldwin-Wallace College, Ohio, and Masters of Museum Science and Historic Preservation from Wake Forest University, North Carolina.  During the 2005-06 school year, McKinnell received the Mansfield City School District Teacher of the Year Award.  Prior to becoming a teacher, McKinnell was the first director of the William G. MatherMuseum in Cleveland, Ohio where she received the Northern Ohio Live Award for achievement.  She also was curator at Garfield’s Home in Mentor, Ohio and a craftsperson/interpreter for Hale Farm and Village in Bath, Ohio.  With this combination of museum and teaching experience, McKinnell is always looking for ways in include primary source material in the classroom and has created several lessons using primary source material and hands-on activities.
